Paul NICOLAS d'Argental (1875-1952) France - Art Nouveau Estimated Period 1920-1925
Ornamental glass vase Roses signed Paul Nicolas - d'Argental, Nancy France
Paul Nicolas is from the École de Nancy. A student of Émile Gallé, he joined the company in 1893 and founded his own company in 1919 with the support of the Cristalleries de Saint-Louis.He initially signed his productions as Argental, then, starting in the late 1920s, as P. Nicolas, occasionally adding the mention Nancy. The style of Paul Nicolas evolved over time: the works signed Argental are typical of the École de Nancy, then gradually diverge, particularly showing the influence of Art Deco; the works signed Paul Nicolas, which are therefore later, reflect the artist's personal search towards stylization, as well as techniques that highlight crystal, the only material he worked with until the Second World War; after the war, unable to source crystal from Saint-Louis, he worked with glass until his death in 1952.
