Framed collagraphy or Lithograph in colors by Belkis Ayon Mansu
Belkis Ayon Mansu (Cuban, 1967-1999)
Ayón was known for her signature printmaking technique called collography. Her work primarily focused on the Abakuá, a secret, all-male Afro-Cuban fraternal society and its founding myth. The figures in her prints, like the one pictured, characteristically lack mouths, symbolizing imposed silence. The central figure is likely Sikán, a princess from the Abakuá myth who was the first to hear the mystical voice of the sacred fish, which is also depicted.
