Historically, "anti-spitting" campaigns and ordinances became common in the United States around the turn of the 20th century. These efforts were a public health measure intended to combat the spread of diseases, particularly tuberculosis, which was a leading cause of death at the time. The New York City Department of Health passed one of the first such bans in the U.S. in 1896. Today, spitting on public property is still illegal in many municipalities
