Like Marguerite Gérard and Michel Garnier, Van Gorp belonged to the generation of artists who were influenced by the works and style of Dutch seventeenth century painters such as Gabriel Metsu and Gerard Ter Borch.  Like their Dutch predecessors, these more modern artists gave special attention to the rendering of fabric and still life details depicted in elegant scenes de genre
